Mathews House & Garden: Talk & Tour

Mathews House & Garden: Talk & Tour

Join us Thursday, May 1 at the Mathews House & Garden for a tour of one of the most biologically diverse half-acres in Kentucky. The event will include a scavenger hunt, a guided tour led by Biology Professor Dr. Jim Krupa, and tea sandwiches, drinks, and other garden-party refreshments.

Emily McDonald, a Master's Candidate at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign currently completing a joint practicum at UK, will showcase research she has been conducting at UK Libraries relating to the Mathews House & Garden.

The Mathews House & Garden is located at the corner of South Limestone and Washington Avenue. In the event of rain, the event will be moved to the Great Hall in the SCRC.

A living botany textbook, the Mathews Garden contains about 350 species of mostly native plants and trees, including every Kentucky variety of dogwood, azalea, hydrangea, and viburnum. Dozens of native wildflowers and several rare trees grow in the garden, including roundleaf birch, Georgia oak, and striped maple.

The Mathews home is named for its former owner Clarence Mathews, a botany professor at UK who was Chairman of the Agriculture Department from 1892-1908 and the Dean of the College of Agriculture from 1908-1910. His daughter Ruth continued to live at the house until her death in 1986
